Vegetables are a vital part of a healthy diet, and although we all know this, sometimes it’s hard to always incorporate vegetables into all of our meals!
We’ve compiled a list of ways to increase your daily vegetable intake and get all of the excellent multivitamins and nutrition that vegetables have to offer.
- Incorporate veg from your first meal of the day – that means breakfast! Think savoury muffins, kale smoothies and vegetarian omelettes.
- Choosing a salad for your lunch or dinner is a great way to increase your vegetable intake as the entire meal is based on vegetables!
- Choose vegetables for your morning tea, afternoon tea and snacks. Vegetable sticks with homemade hommus is a double hit of veg.
- Eat at home – it’s hard to increase your daily vegetable servings if you are eating out regularly, so aim to eat dinner at home most nights of the week. If you are out try ordering an extra side of steamed veg, or choose takeaway options that make fresh salads (such as Sumo Salad or Subway) or Mexican takeaway options (Guzman Y Gomez or Zambrero) that make burrito bowls without the carbs (essentially a salad!).
- Meat free Mondays – introduce at least one meat free day or even dinner into your week. This is great for your health and will help you to start thinking creatively with vegetables for your meals.
- Always start by serving your vegetables first when you are dishing up your dinner. Why, because vegetables should fill at least half of your plate, followed with meat and carbohydrates filling ¼ of the plate each.
